Daily Prayer, Daily Progress

From the April 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God's great love for His children is often figuratively expressed in the Bible by references to rivers and waters. The Psalmist declares: "How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures." Ps. 36:7, 8;

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says of this river: "The river of His pleasures is a tributary of divine Love, whose living waters have their source in God, and flow into everlasting Life. We drink of this river when all human desires are quenched, satisfied with what is pleasing to the divine Mind." Pulpit and Press, p. 3;

When longings for human affection, material pleasures, possessions, or positions yield to spiritual yearnings; when worldly ambitions give place to holier aims; when human outlining surrenders to divine Love's design for our lives, we are ready to drink of the life-giving river of His love. How do we reach this point of spiritual progress? Through daily prayer for ourselves.
