I grew up in a home where both parents were devoted Christian Scientists. The many healings and demonstrations I witnessed laid a foundation in this wonderful religion, which later sustained me when I faced the greatest challenge of my life.
In 1953, I left my native Scotland and emigrated, alone, to Canada. I married in 1954, and though I was a member of The Mother Church and joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, there was a period when my stand for Christian Science was not very strong. Later I was invited to assist in the formation of a new branch church. Through the assistance of my husband, who was not a student of Science, I had Christian Science class instruction. The inspired teaching added to the spiritual foundation I was gradually building.
Then, after fourteen years of marriage, my husband suddenly left me, and I found myself alone with three girls aged twelve, ten, and nine, and a tiny boy of six months, who was in somewhat delicate health. I was heartbroken, and the feeling of responsibility was almost too much to bear. However, my friends stood by me, and I sold our house and moved to an apartment.
