This series gives firsthand accounts of how a number of successful Christian Science Sunday School teachers approach their assignments. It appears in those issues of the Journal not containing the quarterly "Sunday School" column. This is the last article in the series.

"How I teach my Sunday School class"

From the August 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I can honestly say that I never enjoyed any church work as much as being with my class of two- and three-year-olds on Sunday mornings. My approach to the task can be stated in three words: LOVE, LISTEN, LEARN.

When I started teaching, I asked myself how I could communicate better with the two's and three's, and my answer was quite simply—Love. Tiny children may not understand many of the words of Christian Science, but they do understand the language of Love, which includes patience, tenderness, firmness, enthusiasm.

Divine Love does not attach human labels to its children. I have learned not to see a child as naughty, as coming from a broken home, as willful or restless. I try to see each one as God's child, and to recognize his or her God-given individuality. Since God, their loving Father-Mother, is ever present, there is no need for any sense of separation from human parents, nor any tears. I love to be there, and this love engenders enthusiasm, and I am sure the children must feel it. This love has grown from a personal, human kind of love, to a love that just loves.
