Many years ago my mother handed me a book, with these words, "Here, this is something that will help you." The book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
When I opened its inspired pages and started reading, I knew it contained the truth of God for which I had been longing. I ate it up. And it has sweetened the bitter struggles that take place in one's consciousness when Truth is bringing to the surface and destroying false traits of character, such as human will, fear, impatience, and so on.
Mrs. Eddy says in Miscellaneous Writings (p. 118), "Be of good cheer; the warfare with one's self is grand; it gives one plenty of employment, and the divine Principle worketh with you,—and obedience crowns persistent effort with everlasting victory." I have learned, through the teachings of Christian Science, that trying to war with error in any place except one's own consciousness is futile, since what we take into our own consciousness is what we experience. Christian Science keeps me busy watching my own thought, and this regeneration of thought is what I am most grateful for.
