The Myth of Animal Magnetism

From the December 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the one hundred years since the publication of Science and Health with key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the truth in this book has been forcing deep-seated materialism to surface. Evil exposed seems more active. As Truth destroys evil, evil's cries grow louder until harmony reigns. This purifying and fulfilling process is harmless to individuals and institutions in the degree that Christian Science is applied.

This Science defuses evil of its explosive and mushrooming claim to destructive power. A bomb demolition squad uses its understanding of the nature and operation of explosives to safely handle or defuse them. In a similar way Christian Science applies its explanation of the spurious makeup and action of animal magnetism to nullify it. In this light we may ask: What is animal magnetism? Where does it attack? How does it work? How do we handle it to destroy it?

What is animal magnetism? It is simply the lie about Truth. Ignorance and darkness would shroud it as some mysterious, real power. Christ Jesus exposed this myth by calling it the devil or evil—a murderer and liar, devoid of truth (see John 8:44). The lie is seen in its depraving effects on humanity: hatred, envy, rivalry, revenge, sensuality, desire to kill or destroy; acceptance of disintegration, deterioration, perversion, retardation, disfigurement; belief in crime, war, accident, insanity, sin, sickness, death.
