For more than half a century I have experienced the benefits of Christian Science, individually and for my family.
Before this healing and regenerating truth came into our lives, I had attended a service in a Church of Christ, Scientist, only once, as a child, and had never known about Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy or any literature issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society— except that as a newspaperman I was familiar with The Christian Science Monitor. I had been reared by a highly spiritually-minded mother. She had been healed in the 1870's of a physically incapacitating nervous breakdown by pure faith in God, the rejection of medical or other material remedies, and a constant study of the Scriptures. Because of her advanced ideas, her firm belief in the supremacy of Spirit, and her understanding of the Christ—ideas that were instilled in me— my thought was receptive to Christian Science when it was presented to my wife by a neighbor over the back fence, so to speak. I interposed no objection when my wife began to read Science and Health and asked a Christian Science practitioner for help. But it was not until I witnessed an overnight healing of our four-year-old son of ivy poisoning, which practically covered the upper half of his body, that I personally was convinced of the efficacy of this truth, and embraced it.
Since that day in the early 1920's, Christian Science has been our guardian and guide. I have never been without gainful employment and have had many healings and protection in accidents. Two experiences may be worth recording.
