A healing aspect of our daily prayers

From the July 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy's unselfish prayers were clearly of great consequence in bringing about remarkable spiritual development in her own life and in enabling her to help and heal countless other people. From her writings, and sometimes also from biographies of her, we gain useful information as to what she found essential to include in daily prayer. It's helpful to make note of these points as we come to them in our reading. They furnish general guidance for us in following Christ.

For example, in the third series of We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Calvin C. Hill recalls: "On one occasion Mrs. Eddy said to me, in substance, 'The first thing I do in the morning when I awake is to declare I shall have no other mind before divine Mind, and become fully conscious of this, and adhere to it throughout the entire day; then the evil cannot touch me.'" We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Third Series (Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 1953), p. 42;

To be aware that the divine Mind is the only actual consciousness and that this infinite consciousness is the true Mind of man is to obey the first commandment in a very real way. The Christian Scientist might interpret God's commandment "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" Ex. 20:3; to mean: "Don't accept the false, personal sense of mind, love, intelligence. Prove instead that all true wisdom and love emanate from the divine Person, God, who is infinite Love, omnipresent Spirit, Mind." According to Science, the divine personality is never transmitted to man, although it is individually reflected by man.
