What's going on in church?

From the July 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No one spiritually awakened by the activities of the Church of Christ, Scientist, has any doubt that something vital is going on in church, unseen yet deeply felt. But it is not always easy to answer the question, What is this something?

I was once brought face to face with my own need of an answer to this question. I had been given about a month to prepare a brief talk on developing a clearer, more mature, more appreciative understanding of Church and the church organization. This was a challenge because to be qualified to speak on this subject I first had to have such an understanding myself!

A single sentence from Science and Health opened the way to the successful completion of my task. "Not personal intercommunion," writes Mrs. Eddy, "but divine law is the communicator of truth, health, and harmony to earth and humanity." Science and Health, p. 72;This is a humbling realization. Humanly, we have our role in voicing God's Word. But it is all too easy for the active church member to think of himself, rather than divine law, as the source of the communication.
