New birth and inspiration

From the July 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Changing our view of man from the material to the spiritual, we are newborn. And as we continue to be born again each day through our study and application of Christian Science, we have the inspiration we need to heal spiritually.

To see God's glory expressed in healing is to be conscious of His ever-presence and all-power. It is to discern the spiritual ideas that show the nothingness of evil and the allness of infinite Love. To attain this inspired state of thought, we need to be vigilant in our efforts to give up the material and adopt the spiritual. When Nicodemus came to our Master questioning him about his healing works, Jesus said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."John 3:3;

Is the new birth something that occurs only when we first find the Christ, Truth? No indeed. When we are initially touched by Truth, we feel that special uplift of thought we come to know as inspiration, and we know that to some degree we have become new creatures. But in order to continue progressing, we need to put off some dependency on matter each day. Mrs. Eddy writes: "The new birth is not the work of a moment. It begins with moments, and goes on with years; moments of surrender to God, of childlike trust and joyful adoption of good; moments of self-abnegation, self-consecration, heaven-born hope, and spiritual love."
