For many years I was troubled with a malfunctioning heart. From time to time I asked for treatment from a Christian Science practitioner and was always greatly helped immediately. It became apparent, however, that I needed to be more consecrated in my own efforts to prove the healing efficacy of Christian Science. An article in Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy, entitled "Fidelity," was an inspiration to me (see pp. 339-343). Many unlovely traits of character surfaced to be uprooted— impatience, criticism, and self-righteousness, to name a few.
I had much fear to overcome. My husband had passed on, leaving me with the responsibility of raising our two young children. This Bible verse was a staff on which to lean (Isa. 41:10): "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." There were gradual signs of progress. I began to feel happier and more at peace. At a time when the condition seemed at its worst, two relatives, who were not Scientists, were sharing our home. During this period I learned the valuable lesson of not talking about my challenges and of keeping one's own counsel, with God.
One evening after dinner, following a busy day in an office, I felt the need to retire early and read a current issue of the Journal. In it I found an article that met my need completely. As I read, the conviction came to me that there was not a condition of matter to be healed, only a belief in it. The healing was instantaneous. Symptoms of a malfunctioning heart disappeared instantly. I felt whole and well, and rose and finished some household duties. This healing took place over thirteen years ago, and there has never been a return of the disorder.
