My first exposure to Christian Science came while I was still in high school. I could not accept the teaching at the time. It seemed too demanding, especially the concept of reliance on prayer alone for healing of physical diseases. I now can really appreciate those who were undaunted by my opposition.
A few years later, everything had gone wrong for me. Relationships with family and friends had deteriorated, it seemed, beyond repair. I was unemployed, and I had a multitude of physical ailments. The medicines that filled my cabinet failed to heal, and I'd become addicted to the drugs that were supposed to help me. Again I met a Christian Scientist. This time I was desperate. I could not be helped medically, but Christian Science offered an alternative.
To begin the study of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was hard. The ideas were totally foreign to theological concepts instilled in me as a child. But I discarded at once the drugs (with no withdrawal effects), and with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, I began. Gradually, and often with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, every problem was solved.
