On January 31, 1979, The Christian Science Board of Directors announced that Earl W. Foell will become Editor of The Christian Science Monitor in June. Mr. Foell has been Managing Editor of the Monitor since October 1970 and succeeds John Hughes, who in June will complete twenty-five years of service with the Monitor, almost nine of them as Editor. Mr. Hughes is leaving the Monitor to head his own newspaper company in Orleans, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod.
As Editor and Managing Editor, respectively, John and Earl have worked closely together in the past nine years to bring about a number of major improvements in the Monitor. These included the introduction of a syndicated Monitor news service to other newspapers, a Monitor news service to radio stations, conversion of the paper from broadsheet to tabloid format, transmission of the Monitor via high-speed facsimile equipment to remote printing plants, and more recently the introduction of a new pullout feature section.
Mr. Hughes's years as Editor have been exceptionally productive for the Monitor. We are deeply grateful to him and to Earl for their outstanding accomplishments during their years as a Monitor team, and for the continuity that Earl's editorship will provide.
