The eighty-seven compelling statements in Mrs. Eddy's writings containing the word "proportion" or a derivative are well worth our searching out and pondering. Such statements as: "In proportion as matter loses to human sense all entity as man, in that proportion does man become its master." Science and Health, p. 369; "Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence,—our health, our longevity, and our Christianity." ibid., p. 167:
These impel us to consider what proportion of our time and thought and interest we give to the stock market, television, sports and recreation—to worldly concerns—and what proportion to that which is spiritual and eternal. Do we give a preponderance of thought to reality, to God's spiritual universe as distinguished from the illusory, mortal experience? Mrs. Eddy says, "The mists of matter—sin, sickness, and death— disappear in proportion as mortals approach Spirit, which is the reality of being." No and Yes, p. 16; And convinced of Truth, do we act on it? Are the human steps we take based on faith that the spiritual is true?
Christian Science has not lost its efficacy. Practitioners have not lost their power to heal through the application of Truth. For the divinely scientific method of overcoming error remains as it was in the beginning. As Mrs. Eddy made known the Science of Christ, her teachings attracted many ardent followers, filled with the spirit of Truth and striving to follow the instructions and admonitions of their Leader. Can we do less and succeed? Can we do less and demonstrate Christian Science?
