The healing function of God's law

From the May 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The law of God reveals what God is. It interprets and demonstrates the truth of God's being in terms that consciousness anywhere can understand. On this planet, consciousness is dominantly human, and the language of human consciousness involves the conflict between good and evil. So God's law interprets and demonstrates, in terms of the triumph of good over evil, that God is All and that His goodness excludes evil.

In absolute reality—in God's universe—God is the only Principle, the only Mind, the only Soul. All that exists is in and of this Principle, Mind, Soul, and man is the conception, the outcome, the emanation of this infinite One. In God and man, then, there are no imperfections, no unintelligent thoughts or acts, no selves other than the one I am reflecting its own infinite individuality. But for human consciousness to comprehend all this it must witness the triumph of perfection over imperfection, intelligence over nonintelligence, the activity of Love over the evidence of selfish egotism.

For centuries the Bible has been, for a large segment of mankind, the basic guide to faith and hope because it shows how God's law has interpreted the immaculate truth in human terms. It tells of the destruction of the Egyptian forces as they pursued the Israelites across the Red Sea; of Elijah not only outwitting but annihilating the prophets of Baal; of David declaring Goliath powerless because he was defying the army of the Lord, and then proving his point by facing him with no armor but a shepherd's sling and conquering him. These and many other incidents related in the Old Testament declare vividly the fact that God is indeed All and that whatever would appear to oppose Him is, in reality, not only powerless but nonexistent. In each case, though the opposition seemed formidable, it was proved unable to stand the test of truth.
