Christian Science first came into my life when my mother was healed of intestinal cancer. This healing made such an impact on our family of seven that we all began attending the Church of Christ, Scientist.
Soon after becoming a member of a branch church I had an opportunity to prove the practicability of this Science. I foolishly held a firework in my hand after lighting the fuse, instead of placing it on the ground. My hands were both badly burned, and the pain was intense, so I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. Gradually the pain disappeared. I was able to drive my car, shave myself, and do many things that would have seemed impossible. Within two weeks a complete covering of new skin had formed, and I was out on my farm working quite normally. This healing was a wonderful blessing and an incentive to spiritual progress.
At one point I had been making steady progress on the farm when two very bad winters occurred, the second practically destroying all my vegetables. There was little in reserve, for it had been used to stock and improve the farm. I was very distressed, full of self-pity and selfcondemnation. My whole world seemed to have collapsed. However, my fundamental faith and trust in God were unshaken.
