In September 1972, I began to attend services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. The truths read from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy were so logical that the book appealed to me at once. However, the concept of spiritual healing seemed remote and abstract.
Toward the end of the month, I met the Christian Science practitioner who served as Campus Counselor for the Christian Science college organization I attended. We had lunch together. At the time I was suffering acutely from bronchitis, an illness that afflicted me several times a year, and with increasing severity. When I mentioned the problem to the practitioner, he asked if I would like to receive Christian Science treatment.
At first his question startled me. Here we were in a crowded restaurant; I hardly knew a thing about Science, and the symptoms of illness were aggressive. But his quiet confidence, combined with the fact that neither "miracle drugs" nor homeopathic treatments had had any healing effect on me, caused me to assent humbly and unreservedly. The practitioner then explained some of the basic truths of perfect God and His perfect idea, man.
