Reared in a church-centered Protestant household, I memorized countless Bible verses and knew a good bit about Paul's travels. In my early teens I was preparing to follow several generations of my family into church membership. But I felt something was missing. It seemed as if there had to be a key, somewhere, to the deeper, inner meaning of those loved Bible passages.
On my own, I began visiting a number of other Sunday Schools of differing denominations. Finally, I went to a Christian Science Sunday School. In my first visit I glimpsed something of the present and active love of God for His creation. That room seemed full of light! Shortly afterwards I enrolled in this Sunday School. I was satisfied that I had found the way to unlock the deeper meaning of the Scriptures—with the help of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
During my first year of Sunday School attendance, I was healed of an illness that had lingered for about four years. At times it had been necessary for me to stay in bed for days at a time because of this condition, which the family doctor diagnosed as the beginning stages of diabetes. I was not aware of the availability of Christian Science practitioners to help me through prayer, but I did grasp the fact that God's love heals, and I accepted this fact. When I realized that I was no longer suffering from this illness, I told my parents and they took me to the doctor, who confirmed the completeness of the healing. Soon my parents and my sister began attending the local Christian Science church, and later they became members.
