Church in Action

Sunday School: one of the most vital activities of the branch church

From the March 1980 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The hunger to learn and to keep on learning makes a Christian Science Sunday School class irresistible. And when pupils and teachers share this hunger, spiritual education takes place. Often it begins with the teacher's obvious interest in learning about God. His or her love and knowledge of the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health, are challenging and compelling.

A teacher can't very often fool students. They know when he is actually living what he teaches and when he is simply putting on a good act. It is the conviction behind the teacher's words, his genuine commitment to healing, to learning more of God and man, that propels the class from week to week.

And the teacher's regular attendance in class is essential. Sunday School teaching is no game, nor are any awards handed out. It is love for God and respect and deepest affection for young people that motivate and reward inspired and inspiring teaching.
