Although I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School while I was growing up, I lost interest in this teaching during my teens. It was not until after the Second World War, when working amidst the moral and physical bankruptcy of postwar Europe, that I started looking for an answer to the questions that confronted me. I explored many avenues that ultimately proved unsatisfactory, and then, finally, when on leave in England, went to see a Christian Science practitioner. What he said to me was simple but convincing. I started to study this Science again with a sense, not of years wasted, but rather of the truth of this Bible verse manifested (Jer. 31:33): "I will put my law in their inward parts." For the first time I appreciated the fact that my initial acquaintance with this healing system had really prevented me from accepting any other teaching.
Shortly after this, I was taken to a military hospital in Germany because I was suffering with diphtheria. My parents were cabled that I was on the danger list, and I had a cable sent to the practitioner I'd originally contacted in England, asking for his help. In the morning, when tests for the disease proved negative, the hospital staff willingly acknowledged the efficacy of Christian Science in bringing about the healing.
In the years that followed, first in the Army and Intelligence and, later, in international business, I have found this Science to be the answer to my own needs and those of others. I have seen sickness healed, broken bones set, financial difficulties resolved, and a myriad of smaller matters put right.
