A grain of mustard seed. At times we've perhaps not taken seriously enough just how much faith Christ Jesus recommended for moving mountains. More often a truckload may have been our approach—and even then the mountain sometimes held its ground.
Jesus' Sermon on the Mount stands as a marvelous example of blending eternal truths of God and man with the practical application of such truths. He could encourage his listener, for instance, to be perfect, complete, even as God is perfect.See Matt. 5:48. Here was a profound statement of metaphysics. And yet Jesus didn't spend his sermon in theory; even a single point of ultimate spiritual truth—a grain—brought powerful illumination to everything else he said.
The reason for his insistence on meekness, mercy, forbearance, forgiveness, fidelity, literally came alive when placed within the context of what he knew of man's relationship to God. Jesus understood with crystal clarity man's purity, his undisturbed unity with Spirit. But instead of preaching endless theory, he gave this understanding practical value through parable and action.
