At one time or another, almost everyone has found himself so consumed with some interest or fear that he has had trouble shaking free from its unnatural hold on his attention. There may have been personal business that one either longed or dreaded to be involved with. Or a particular person or place one wished to be closer to, or farther from! Such mental states can range from drifting and daydreaming to extremes of harmful preoccupation.
When we are really aware of God's presence, however, we can know the legitimacy or illegitimacy of what demands our attention, and therefore we can't be lulled or manipulated by the unreal slavery of matter-based beliefs.
What is it that attracts the greatest proportion of our attention today— during our conscious and even our not so-well-guarded moments? This question has significance. It will help us see to a great extent the substance of our experience; but most important, it will indicate what God means to us.
