Dissolving "the adamant of error"

From the November 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When a problem has not yielded to treatment in Christian Science, what then? There is no metaphysical formula. Each challenge demands inspired prayer, humble listening to God, and active response to Truth. But when a case drags on, we may need to face up to what Mrs. Eddy calls "the adamant of error" and deal with it conclusively.

She writes, "In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death."Science and Health, p. 242.

By derivation, the word "adamant" points to something unyielding or unsubdued. In ancient times the word referred to an imaginary substance believed to be impenetrably hard. What an apt description of error, or evil!
