It is high time that I testify to the certain effect of scientific prayer. As a child, I attended the Christian Science Sunday School. An early instance of healing occurred when my family were quite new in their study of Science. I was troubled with a stomach disorder. When relief did not come, my parents gave me a choice. I could either consult a physician or ask for the help of a Christian Science practitioner. I chose the latter. I talked with the practitioner, and I recall vividly that fear gave way to a wonderful awareness of God's closeness and love. The next morning I woke completely well, and there was no return of the discomfort. This healing meant much to me as a sure proof of the practicality of divine Science.
Although I had moments of doubt, I never strayed far from this teaching. Proofs of its value have been received again and again. During my high school years, growing pains were counteracted by a blossoming understanding of my spiritual selfhood as God's own beloved child, both lovely and loving.
Soon after marriage I became pregnant. At the time my husband was going through intensive Army training, and we were living far from our families. My life seemed a bit topsy-turvy. After I'd had a few visits to the Army clinic for maternity care, the doctors became concerned because they suspected I had diabetes. To my knowledge, I was not manifesting any symptoms of the disease. However, after an initial test indicated the condition might be present, the doctors asked that I be tested further.
