When someone close leaves us

From the January 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Divine Love is omnipotent. There is no other power. To feel this power when we're in the depths of fear, despair, or grief is to know that not only does God exist but that it is His very nature to love each of us, to care for us, comfort us, heal us.

The Christ, Truth, is what kindles the feeling of certainty in our hearts that divine Love is with us. The Christ turns the darkest, most despairing hour into the dawning of regenerated, spiritualized consciousness. Anyone who has had this experience is truly able to sing with the Psalmist, "Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness." Ps. 30:11.

Some months ago one who had been a great help to me in my growing understanding of Christian Science passed on. The initial reaction was disbelief that an individual so totally consecrated to doing God's will could leave us with his work unfinished. I felt as though I had been robbed of a relationship that meant more than words can tell. I felt that the world had suffered a great loss, too—a loss of one who had given himself completely and effectively to the ministry of Christian Science healing.
