Lifting the curtain

From the March 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When the curtain is opened, light instantly pours into a darkened room. Similarly, when the curtain of a false sense of substance and identity is removed through the study and living of Christian Science, the truth floods thought.

On one side of this fictitious curtain we find discord, fuzzy outlines, sickness, and the like. On the other side is the real: untold good, health, purity. How can we remove this curtain? "Divine Science rolls back the clouds of error with the light of Truth, and lifts the curtain on man as never born and as never dying, but as coexistenet with his creator,"Science and Health, p. 557. writes Mrs. Eddy.

What is this curtain that would obscure our true origin? A personal sense of self is one major ingredient. Paul comments on how to remove this obstacle: "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men"Col. 3:23. and "Do all to the glory of God." I Cor. 10:31. These statements are without qualification. They require doing even the simplest task with love rather than just from a sense of obligation. Everything we do can be an instrument for expanding and developing the spiritual qualities that constitute man. The job to be done is secondary to the spirit in which it is accomplished; and this spirit can raise the curtain of mortality and reveal the spiritual instead of the mortal sense of man.
