I have much to be grateful for, but more than anything, I'm grateful for having the opportunity to learn about God through Christian Science. My life would have been decidedly different had it not been for Christian Science.
One time when I was about three, apparently curiosity got the better of me and, wondering what was on top of the stove, I put my hand directly on a red-hot burner. My sudden cries got the attention of my mother, who quickly took my hand off the burner and started to calm me. A devoted Christian Scientist herself, she told me later that she immediately dismissed her own fears concerning the burn by affirming that I was the loved child of God, dwelling only in His care and loving protection. She realized that inharmony could never enter the kingdom of heaven, where all God's ideas dwell harmoniously. This meant that no harm could come to the man of His creating— my (and everyone's) real selfhood.
By evening I was carrying on routinely. It was not until my mother was bathing me that night that she remembered the burn. Upon opening my hand to examine it, she found that it had been "restored whole, like as the other" (Matt. 12:13). In fact, the healing was so complete that she could not tell which hand had been burned.
