Living gratitude

From the November 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Two mites—all she had—to tithe for her God.See Mark 12:41-44.
Did she wonder how—
"How do I give a tenth of a farthing?
Yet I would show my gratitude
For all that I have.
But how can I give a tenth of the love of friends?

Of their care for me and mine?
A tenth of my children's honor and love?
A tenth of the beauty of fields in flower—
Of birds singing—
Soft rain falling?
I have so much—and yet so little—
I can only give all I have—for
All my love is for the Lord
And His creation."

She who won the Master's commendation,
Did she, hearing, wonder how he knew
It was all she had?
Surely she would have yearned
To know more of his love,
To learn what true riches are.
Did he not say she gave more
Than all others?

Even as she found the source
Of unfailing, outpouring good,
So must I—in living gratitude—
Give all my living,
All my thoughts and deeds,
To serve the Lord's anointed,
The Christ, which blesses all
With the riches of God's love.
