THE CHURCH IN ACTION

Working together in church...

From the February 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The following article was prepared by the Church Activities Department of The Mother Church.

Every Christian Scientist has the privilege of utilizing the truths of divine Science in church challenges as well as in meeting individual physical and mental discords. Each church membership is constantly called on to practice its religion right within the church body. Some ways for members to do this are: striving to work more closely with each other in Christian fellowship; uniting in prayer to resolve church situations; and demanding of themselves that every church activity be impelled and directed by the highest spiritual momentum and purpose. Only such demonstration will implement the mission of the Church of Christ, Scientist, designed by Mrs. Eddy to heal and save mankind.

Democratic self-government is an integral part of Mrs. Eddy's design for the branches; they must practice it in order to fulfill their mission. In her reference to "the Magna Charta of Christian Science," Mrs. Eddy gives us unique insight into her provision for democracy in church. She writes, "The church is the mouthpiece of Christian Science—its law and gospel are according to Christ Jesus; its rules are health, holiness, and immortality,—equal rights and privileges, equality of the sexes, rotation in office."The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, pp. 254-255
