Holding "uncomplaining guard"

From the February 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Praying for the world can seem like an awfully tall order at times. No doubt most of us can remember at least once when the prospect of praying about world hunger or nuclear holocaust seemed so overwhelming that we were tempted to hold off on global issues and tackle "easier" challenges on our own home front.

Certainly we have a right to witness the harmonizing effect of Christ, Truth, in our daily lives. But Christian Scientists also have an obligation to pray specifically for the world and all mankind. Mrs. Eddy instructs, "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind."Manual of The Mother Church, Art. VIII, Sect. 6.

Spiritual perspective—perspective that humbly acknowledges the goodness and perfection of God and His creation— brings steadiness and confidence to our prayers for the world. It underpins our faith with courage and broadens our love to embrace the family of man.
