Purity is often thought of as an absence: pure water has no dirt or harmful chemicals in it. But purity is actually a potent healing presence—the unhindered presence of good.
The Master is our supreme example of this. As the Son of God, Christ Jesus presented God's image to humanity. So purely did he embody spiritual sonship, that disease, sin, raging insanity—even death—vanished in the face of his spirituality. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us, "The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real, more formidable in truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death."Science and Health, p. 317.
Jesus certainly understood his true individuality. But this understanding wasn't merely intellectual. It included demonstration. Jesus knew himself to be the likeness of Love; and his perception of this fact was evidenced by his pure expression of love. He understood that he emanated from Soul; and his spiritual dignity and grace attested this understanding. For the Master, then, purity wasn't a colorless absence but the vibrant manifestation of God's goodness.
