Christian Science came into my life while I was working for a major university and also studying for my doctorate in religious education. To recount the blessings that have come to me since that time would take many pages. This is just one small example. When a Christian Scientist gave me my first copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I was in a newly created job with many challenges. I frequently felt as though the job and its problems were beyond my abilities.
Then I began reading the textbook. During a relatively short period all the problems were resolved. As I later pondered what had happened to make them go away, I realized that the only thing that had changed in my life was the arrival of Christian Science. I knew then that the change this Science had brought about in my thinking had led to the solution of those difficulties. In the years since, my work has taken me into more challenging responsibilities. But Christian Science has sustained me through all of them.
The most dramatic evidence of this Science at work in my life occurred while I was still new in my study of this teaching. At that time I was doing my doctoral research in the Republic of Ireland. My thesis topic was rather controversial, and some individuals were reluctant to give me access to research material relevant to my work. In one case, I had written in advance and been assured that everything would be available. But when I arrived with my letter of introduction, the staff I'd expected to meet were away, and the individual temporarily in charge refused me access to the material. He gave the excuse that I probably didn't know Irish (Gaelic) and therefore would not be able to read the card catalog that was the key to their documents, some of which were in Irish also. Despite my assurances that I did know the language, he still declined me access to the material.
