Christian healing as practiced in Christ Jesus' day was accomplished by spiritual means alone, and without material aid. And so it is today, as practiced in Christian Science. "Our system of Mind-healing," Mrs. Eddy writes, "rests on the apprehension of the nature and essence of all being,—on the divine Mind and Love's essential qualities. Its pharmacy is moral, and its medicine is intellectual and spiritual, though used for physical healing. Yet," she adds, "this most fundamental part of metaphysics is the one most difficult to understand and demonstrate, for to the material thought all is material, till such thought is rectified by Spirit."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 460.
Spiritual healing is inseparable from the way of salvation taught by the Master. Christ Jesus' practice of healing inspired faith. For example, a woman who had had an issue of blood for twelve years had worsened under the care of physicians. But when she heard of Jesus, she said that if she could only touch his garment she would be healed. So she made her way through the throng that surrounded him and touched the hem of his clothes; and she was healed.
Was it the mere touch of a hand on a piece of cloth that brought about such a healing? Was the healing the result of her belief that the touch would heal her? Careful examination of the Bible accounts clearly shows that what one might describe as spiritual medicine healed her. Mark says that Jesus knew at once "that virtue had gone out of him." He turned around and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" When the woman admitted what had happened, "he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole."Mark 5:25-34.
