The Church: its mission . . . and ours

From the September 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The signs of our times indicate a great need for spiritual understanding and demonstration of the true idea of Church as cognized and expressed through the Church of Christ, Scientist. Today the demand is tremendous for an ever clearer view of church government, for greater appreciation and effective support of the By-Laws stated in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. It is through obedience to these spiritually based rules that we avail ourselves of the blessings of divine Mind's government of its beloved likeness, spiritual man—our true identity.

Basically, the correct idea of the Church is spiritual. The spiritual structure unfolds to human consciousness through the understanding that it exists in and of God, who is ever-present divine Principle, Love. Being spiritual, Church, the divine structure, is perfect, complete, immutable, harmonious, immortal. It is God-governed and God-directed. It is maintained and sustained by divine law.

"Church" is defined by Mrs. Eddy in the Glossary of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, in these words: "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
