THE CHURCH IN ACTION

ACTION IN THE FIELD

From the February 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The list of authorized teachers of Christian Science will appear later in the year in The Christian Science Journal.

One of the most important ways a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, fulfills Christ Jesus' command to "love thy neighbour as thyself" Matt. 22:39 is by providing a Reading Room for its community. The opportunity for prayer and quiet study of the Bible and Christian Science literature offers what people most need—the understanding of God that brings freedom, health, conscious worth, and lasting peace.

And what speaks more convincingly of the members' desire to embrace their neighbors than the Reading Room's location? Just as Christ Jesus' healing ministry took him into the heart of cities and villages and among great crowds, so a Reading Room should be where the people are. In writing to The Christian Science Board of Directors in 1900 about establishing a Reading Room in Boston, Mrs. Eddy instructed: "Once more God thunders in your ears,—'Get a reading room in Boston and locate it in that part of the city where people will be most apt to go into it.'" Quoted in Christian Science Sentinel, July 17, 1943, p. 1267.
