Silent prayer in church

From the February 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Part of every service in the Church of Christ, Scientist, is devoted to silent prayer. How clear and constructive is our prayer during these moments?

As with all scientific prayer, there is no formula for silent communion with God in church. Dynamic prayer is pertinent to the needs of the moment, not preconceived, not an uninspired reiteration of what sounded good last week. In his Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus warned against "vain repetitions." Matt. 6:7.

In the Manual of The Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy provides a relevant guideline, obedience to which will benefit not just our churches but all mankind. Our Leader directs, "The prayers in Christian Science churches shall be offered for the congregations collectively and exclusively." Man., Art. VIII, Sect. 5.
