The lesson of the mountaintop

From the February 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A mountaintop can be thought of as far more than a mere physical locality. It can typify the altitude of consciousness where discordant earthly concepts are dropped and thought is uplifted through the Christ, Truth, to the spiritual sense of harmonious being.

In order to fulfill his great mission of teaching and healing, Christ Jesus at times went by himself up to a mountain to pray. We are told in Luke, for instance, that our Master "went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God." Luke 6:12.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, also had to rise to mountaintop heights of spiritual consciousness in order to fulfill her own mission. Imagine being the one to introduce the immortal truths of Christian Science to a materialistic, suffering, and warring world! To preach the spiritually unreal and insubstantial nature of matter! The utter goodness of God as infinite Spirit, or divine Love! The perfection of true manhood as God's spiritual reflection!
