Christian Science was introduced to my grandmother in 1915, so my six grandchildren are fifth-generation Christian Scientists. Our family has many times proved the healing, protecting, comforting, and guiding power of Truth. My husband and I met while attending the same Christian Science Sunday School. Later, we joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and The Mother Church and after we were married we had many years of joyous service providing numerous opportunities for spiritual growth.
Demonstrations in our family have included completely harmonious childbirths, a permanent healing of migraine headaches, protection when driving and traveling, and healings of a severe skin condition and scarlet fever. All three of our boys grew up participating in many activities, largely free from illness.
While in his teens, our eldest son fell during an outing with friends. He returned home with one shoulder hanging several inches below the other. At our son's request, his father called a Christian Science practitioner for help. This practitioner asked that we think about the quality of grace. She recommended that the lad work with a line from the Lord's Prayer—"Give us this day our daily bread"—along with the spiritual interpretation of that line from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 17): "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections." She also discussed with us other meanings of the word "grace." One dictionary offers, "ease of movement."
