The benefits of understanding spiritual preexistence

From the March 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus' recognition of who he was and where he came from was as luminous as the sun. Many of Jesus' statements show clearly that he did not regard his own existence as having begun with human birth, nor his real status to be flesh and blood. He said once to his disciples, "What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?" And he added, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." John 6:62, 63. His unparalleled knowledge of his true, spiritual being, forever God-derived and God-sustained, brought him unsurpassed dominion over the discord and limitations attached to a mortal sense of existence.

Our hearts should leap at the prospect of learning what Jesus knew about man's spiritual preexistence; and Mrs. Eddy's writings on the subject make this Christly knowledge readily available for us today.

On page 189 of her Miscellaneous Writings, Mrs. Eddy offers this instructive statement to all who would manifest more of the Way-shower's healing power: "The meek Nazarene's steadfast and true knowledge of preexistence, of the nature and the inseparability of God and man,—made him mighty. Spiritual insight of Truth and Love antidotes and destroys the errors of flesh, and brings to light the true reflection: man as God's image, or 'the first man,' for Christ plainly declared, through Jesus, 'Before Abraham was, I am.'"
