Christian Science came to light for me through an experience with our daughter, who was then about six years old. She was very ill with continuous coughing spells. The doctor had informed us that he did not know the cause nor could he promise a cure. In discouragement we discontinued using the medicine that had been prescribed. Late one night I was extremely upset about the situation. I had left my daughter's bedside and was sitting quietly alone in the living room. Soon the words Christian Science came to thought. I had gained respect for this teaching as a child through an aunt who was a student of Science, and I had gone to a Christian Science Sunday School a few times, where I had learned of healings through prayer.
With renewed hope I called a friend who was a Christian Scientist. She put me in touch with a Christian Science practitioner. I called the practitioner, and as she spoke with me, my fear for the child's safety was completely dissolved by the calmness and love this dear woman expressed. I don't recall a word that she said, but I do remember feeling a sense of peace that I hadn't had in some time. Upon hanging up I was able to sleep normally for the first time in weeks.
The next morning I found our daughter had been completely healed. I called the practitioner with tears of joy to report the good news. What a beautiful proof of God's care! Somehow, though, I felt there was more to Christian Science than just physical healing. I said to the practitioner, "What do I do now?" She then told me about daily study of the Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly, and how to use the Concordances to the Bible and to Mrs. Eddy's writings. Working with these "tools," as I went forward in my pursuit of what had brought about this healing, I found there surely was more—a lot more—to Christian Science. Thus began a whole new way of life for me and my family.
