The beginner in the study and application of Christian Science may be looking mainly for the changes in physical conditions and environment that seem desirable to him. His study of Christian Science and his efforts to live its teaching will surely correct whatever is wrong, but Mrs. Eddy has pointed to a much wider outlook, saying, "Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things." Science and Health, p. 264.
The student will find that Christian Science heals sickness and other inharmonious conditions. Yet this result is not brought about through changing some real condition; it comes through the understanding that man is eternally perfect in all respects, for he is the idea, the likeness, of the perfect God—living, moving, and having his being in Spirit, God. Christ Jesus' promise to his followers was that they should know the truth and the truth would make them free. Acceptance of what is spiritually true will always free one from the effects of believing the contrary.
In the Scriptures we read of Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, who had accomplished mighty exploits but who was afflicted with leprosy.See II Kings 5:1-14. A little Israelite maiden in the service of Naaman's wife spoke of Elisha, the prophet of Israel, who could heal Naaman of the disease. Eventually Naaman arrived at the house of Elisha. Through a messenger the prophet bade Naaman wash seven times in the river Jordan. The soldier, recalling the rivers of his own country, responded to the prophet's directions with scorn. He said, "Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean?" Then "he turned and went away in a rage."
