One day in July 1983 I was driving to the north of London to fulfill a duty at a Christian Science nursing facility. For about four years I had volunteered there —work that involved, among other things, reading the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly to the guests and patients.
The road I was taking is always busy, and soon I came to a big roundabout where the traffic is very fast indeed (some people view it as notoriously so). As always on these journeys, my thoughts were dwelling on the week's lesson, this one being on the subject "Life." It included these passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 397): "When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, 'I am hurt!' . . .
"Now reverse the process. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics, confidence in God as All, which the Scriptures declare Him to be."
