Editors' Round Table

From the November 1987 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There's always a need for compassion. There's never any question about that. But sometimes, thinking they are acting in a way that respects people's privacy or need for spiritual independence, Christian Scientists may seem cold.

The fact is that Science, which is the Comforter, doesn't produce coldness. It brings tangible warmth, affection, support, uplifting of the heart as well as thought. And it does this effectively, on the human scene.

So where does occasional coldness come from? If we're honest, we'll admit that it may come because of fear or aversion or just plain apathy. It may also come because our own particular social customs aren't very warm. Frankly, it may not be custom to care very deeply about fellow church members. They may seem to us to exist in limbo, as a kind of "fourth category"—coming somewhere after relatives, friends, neighbors.
