Through study of the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy, particularly Science and Health, I am learning of God and how to rely on Him.
A vivid example of the application of this teaching occurred during the birth of our second child two years ago. As was the case with our first child, the delivery took place in our home with the assistance of an obstetrician whom I had visited during the pregnancy, and the help of a Christian Science nurse and a student nurse at the time of the birth. During the pregnancy I had also been in contact with a Christian Science practitioner, who helped me deepen my understanding of the spiritual facts governing the child and myself. The practitioner was called to pray in Christian Science as soon as the contractions began. It became evident that the delivery was not progressing as it should, and we kept in close touch with the practitioner by telephone.
At one point I heard the doctor say that the baby was in distress. My immediate response was to affirm out loud that God was the baby's Life and that Life is not dependent on material processes. I knew this to be spiritual fact, and it dispelled the fear that the baby might be harmed.
