I could hardly wait to open the draperies. It had been a very long time since I had been to Boston. Eagerly I looked out of my hotel room window. Looking at The Mother Church, I did not see the changes and additions I had planned to look for, because all I could think was: This Church was built through prayer. It represents God's provision for a weary world.
My heart was filled with gratitude for the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. Before this visit I had read one of the biographies and had been deeply impressed with her complete dedication, unselfish love, tireless labor, and the endless challenges she overcame—challenges that eventually led to the founding and building of her Church.
I thought: This church I am looking at represents the outcome of Mrs. Eddy's prayers, the manifestation of her vision. Its meaning and purpose are found not in the material structure, beautiful as it is, but in Christ Jesus' prophecy "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." John 14:16 . After quoting these words of Jesus, Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." Science and Health, p. 55. The Church of Christ, Scientist, stands as living proof that the ever-present Comforter is with us now and available to all mankind.
