The living Word

From the January 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God's first creative words, as recorded in the Bible, were "Let there be light." Gen. 1:3 The Word was one of enlightenment, revealing God's creation in all its beauty and grandeur.

All through the Bible narrative we see this line of spiritual light expanding in people's consciousness. The Scriptures record the Word of God speaking to Moses on Mount Horeb and in the wilderness of Sinai. It spoke to Samuel and Elijah in a quiet, persistent leading; it was the Word of authority, of instruction, and of comfort. The prophets were instruments of God's Word, spreading His messages with clarity and conviction. Their lives showed God's power and presence with His people.

This line of light, as seen in the Bible, shone forth in full splendor with the fulfillment of the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, the "anointed one." The Jewish people had expected a king who would free them from the yoke of the aliens—a great leader for their nation. Yet Jesus' message was one of a deeper dimension, of universal salvation, not for the Jews alone but for all people. The Saviour's example showed people how to know themselves as the sons and daughters of God through an understanding of the Christ he embodied.
