Should it be surprising to think of the Christian Science movement as still new? As someone once said, "A movement moves." Articles on the subject of Church and movement will appear regularly in this section.

The mission of Christianity in this century

From the January 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Today mankind still greatly needs to understand the nature of God and to experience the safety, spiritual comfort, and progress that come from this understanding. Christ Jesus' mission to prove the true nature of God and thereby bring healing, peace, and salvation is not intended for a select few but for the whole world. The angel announcing to the shepherds the birth of Jesus said that the news was for all people.Luke 2:10 And Jesus commanded his followers to continue his work, saying, "Go ye into all the world." Mark 16:15

Mary Baker Eddy foresaw that in the twentieth century, Christianity could make marked progress toward achieving its more scientific and practical potential. She writes, "If the lives of Christian Scientists attest their fidelity to Truth, I predict that in the twentieth century every Christian church in our land, and a few in far-off lands, will approximate the understanding of Christian Science sufficiently to heal the sick in his name." Pulpit and Press, p. 22

Today progress toward the fulfillment of this prediction is seen in a renewed interest in Christian healing. In order for the world to understand God and to receive the wholeness and peace that result from living the Science of Christianity, it is not necessary for every individual first to join the Church of Christ, Scientist. But Christians everywhere can demonstrate more effectively Christ Jesus' teachings and fulfill his prophecy "These signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:17, 18
