The testimonies appearing in the various Christian Science periodicals have inspired me continuously since my introduction to Christian Science in 1969. At that time a friend gave me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I agreed to read it, but only because I thought I could discredit it. I knew nothing about Christian Science and was doubtful it had any legitimacy, since it was little known in my area. Later I found out how wrong this limited perspective was. As I began reading the book, I found it was answering questions I had always had about God and man. It was as if I had come home. I could not put the book down until I had read it in its entirety.
I had my first healing—of a longstanding problem with periodic headaches—through the prayer of the Christian Science practitioner who had given me my first copy of Science and Health. I was planning to go with this practitioner to a Christian Science lecture but felt unable to attend because of one of these headaches. He told me I could be healed through Christian Science. The practitioner prayed, and to my surprise the headache was gone in a few minutes. I had not believed that healing through prayer was possible. Now I had experienced it firsthand. Not only was I healed, but I felt jubilant. I have not suffered from headaches again.
I knew I had made a wonderful discovery. Christ Jesus told the parable of how a man "found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it" (Matt. 13:46). This is how I felt about Christian Science. The blessings kept pouring forth.
