Poems

"Earth's preparatory school...."

From the October 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

So many lessons,
So much homework,
So many tests?
But what a privilege,
And what an opportunity!
What inspiring textbooks,
What patient teachers.
What finer headmaster?
What absorbing lectures,
And what dedicated congenial students
Enrolled in this splendid school!
What a magnificent chapel,
So quiet, serene, this house of God.
What healing sermons and heavenly music.
And what is the purpose
Of this demanding curriculum,
Of all this deep study
And consecrated work in the laboratory?
Why, to learn how to love,
And what joy—the commencement—
Of heaven on earth!
