I first learned of Christian Science when a friend of my mother's came to visit and noticed that I had a large growth on my neck. This friend asked my mother if she would be willing to let me have Christian Science treatment. With our permission her husband, who was a Christian Science practitioner, prayed for me, and within three days the growth was gone.
This healing started my interest in the study of Christian Science. At the time I had been investigating a great many religions. I was looking for something to answer my questions about the Bible. I began to understand the Bible much better through reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. I saw that Mrs. Eddy had found the Science that Christ Jesus had used for healing. Through her writings Mrs. Eddy shows that there is no mystery to knowing God.
A steppingstone in my spiritual progress happened when a pot of boiling oil spilled over my arm. I called a practitioner for help through prayer. After I told him what had happened, he asked me what the First Commandment was. I stated that it was "Thou shalt have no other gods before me [God]" (Ex. 20:3). He then asked me to recognize that the one omnipotent God, good, is the only power and not to accept any other power. I prayed and sang several inspiring hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. Within an hour I was freely active and my arm was perfectly normal.
