Quite a few years ago when I was a sophomore in college, an event happened that was very significant to me. A word that best describes my attitude toward Christian Science prior to college is uncommitted. I lived with my mother, who was not a practicing Christian Scientist, and most of my childhood illnesses were handled through medical diagnosis and treatment. Other relatives were active Christian Scientists, however, and my awareness of and exposure to Christian Science were positive and influential.
My four high-school years were spent at a boarding military school. Attending a local church on Sunday was mandatory. Since there was no Christian Science church in town, I chose to attend a different church each semester as an educational study of various denominations.
Following graduation, I chose to attend a college where students were mostly Christian Scientists. I felt the values Christian Science offered were unique and more meaningful than those I had experienced so far. I thought that association with other Christian Scientists certainly would be a benefit in developing an understanding of the Science of being discovered by Mrs. Eddy. And to top it off, the college had a football team. I loved playing the game and really wanted to continue for four more years.
